Newcomerstown Emergency Rescue Squad, Inc.



The Newcomerstown Fire Department, located at 200 South College Street in Newcomerstown is operated by the Newcomerstown Emergency Rescue Squad, Inc. or NERS and is proud to serve the Village of Newcomerstown and surrounding townships by providing fire, rescue, and paramedic ambulance services. With over thirty members, the organization has been able to make outstanding achievements and responded to over 1,100 emergency calls in 2006, the third busiest fire department in Tuscarawas County. The fire apparatus is comprised of two engines, one aerial truck, and one tanker truck, and on heavy rescue truck.

August 15, 1991 was the opening day for the Newcomerstown Emergency Rescue Squad, Inc. division of emergency medical services (EMS) that offers paramedic ambulance service to the residents of the Villages of Newcomerstown, and Port Washington and the surrounding townships. The organization currently has four ambulances and staffs paramedcs at the station 24 hours a day, and offers transport to Coshocton County Memorial Hopsital in Coshocton, Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center in Cambridge, Twin City Hopsital in Dennison, and Union Hospital in Dover. The ambulance division recently placed into service a 2007 Excellance Ambulance that is also specially equipped with integrated child safety seats, on-spot chains that provide increased traction through snow and ice conditions, refrigeration and warmers for medications, and increased working space. Built in Madison, Alabama, Excellance Ambulance was rated the safest ambulance in the industry for patient transport as well as personnel safety.

Newcomerstown Police Department

The Newcomerstown Police Department consists of eight full-time officers, including Chief Timothy P. Miller, four full-time dispatchers and a records clerk. There are also one part-time dispatcher and one part-time officier to help keep the area safe. The department protects over 4,000 persons in Newcomerstown and the surrounding areas. The officers respond to about 5,000 calls yearly and can house prisioners for up to ten days before sending them out to other facilities. The department began in 1800 and is continuing to provide protection today, giving a measure of comfort to all persons in and around the area.

The department is a distribution site for child-proof gun lock safety kits through Protect Child Safe. The cruisers are now equipped with containment units purchased used from a nearby department to ensure the safety of the officers.

Tri County Joint Ambulance Service

Tri-County Joint Ambulance District, located at 530 South College Street, has been serving Newcomerstown, Port Washington, and Perry since 1972. In charge of operations is Chief Paramedic Jeff Sanders, who has over 30 years of experience. Tri-County offers paramedic services 24 hours a day with a very well trained staff. Tri-County has made many improvements in the last few years, including more staff and new equipment. Tri-County's Paramedics and EMTs attend continuing education and take refresher classes for recertification. Tri-County is one of a very few services that still operate a quick response Paramedic unit, to get the Paramedic to the patient as quickly as possible. Tri-County sends three members on emergency calls, so they have enough staff on scene to handle most problems, and do not have to wait for additional help. Tri-County operates under the medical supervision of Dr. Daniel Jarrell of Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center. Tri-County offers blood pressure and glucose checks at any time. David Barber Civic Center & NERS, Inc.

Opening in 1985, the David Barber Civic Center, located at 1066 East State Street in Newcomerstown, is also operated by the Newcomerstown Emergency Rescue Squad, Inc. All of the members of the Newcomerstown Fire Department, or NERS, are required to participate in weekly fund-raising activities. The Newcomerstown Fire Department plays bingo to fundraise twice weekly ath the David Barber Civic Center. The proceeds are used to purchase new equipment for the organization and to fund operations. Sunday afternoon bingo begins at 2pm, and Tuesday evening bingo begins at 7pm. Everyone is invited to come and join the fun.
